Senior CPI(M) leader Prakash Karat will serve as the interim coordinator of the party's Polit Bureau and Central Committee, the Left party announced on Sunday. The decision follows the passing of CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury on September 12, at the age of 72.

The Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), currently in session in New Delhi, opted for Karat to assume these roles until the 24th Party Congress scheduled for April 2025 in Madurai. 'This decision was taken due to the sad and sudden demise of the sitting General Secretary, Comrade Sitaram Yechury,' the party stated.

Karat, a senior figure in CPI(M), served as the party's general secretary from 2005 to 2015. He joined the Central Committee in 1985 and became a Polit Bureau member in 1992. The Polit Bureau remains the principal decision-making body of the party.
