The Punjab State Women's Commission, led by Chairperson Raj Lali Gill, has written to President Droupadi Murmu recommending the dismissal of Jai Shankar Singh, Vice-Chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), following serious allegations involving the unauthorized entry into a girls' hostel and inappropriate conduct.
The controversy erupted after Singh's unsanctioned inspection of the hostel, during which he allegedly made derogatory remarks about the students' attire. The incident has provoked ongoing student protests, with demands for his resignation. Gill emphasized that the VC's behavior has significantly undermined the students' trust and violated their privacy.
The Women's Commission, citing its mandate to address women's rights violations, has taken immediate action by recommending Singh's removal and has asked for an inquiry by the Deputy Commissioner of Patiala. The Human Rights Commission has also lodged a complaint, reinforcing calls for protective measures for the students. Despite the turmoil, RGNUL announced it will reopen on September 27.
