Japan's Leadership Contest: A Tumultuous Race for Prime Minister

Japan's ruling party is witnessing one of its most unpredictable leadership contests in decades, a race that could see Japan's youngest or first female premier, or a seasoned veteran claiming his fifth bid.

The scramble to replace current premier Fumio Kishida surfaced in August following his resignation announcement over a series of scandals that hit the Liberal Democratic Party's (LDP) approval ratings hard.

According to polls, three candidates have emerged as frontrunners in the nine-strong field: Shinjiro Koizumi, Sanae Takaichi, and Shigeru Ishiba. All contenders face the challenge of addressing domestic economic concerns and navigating the volatile security environment in East Asia. The LDP must hold a general election by October 2025.
