Union Minister and former Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar on Wednesday condemned the protests at the Haryana-Punjab border, asserting that the demonstrators are not farmers. He expressed confidence that the Supreme Court would soon issue a decision to curb such activities.
Addressing party workers in Ambala, Khattar said, "The route to Punjab at the state border is closed. We had planned to open this route, but those sitting on the other side are not farmers. Under the guise of farmer protests, certain individuals aim to destabilize the government. The people of Haryana are pleased they have prevented these elements from entering the state."
Khattar added that the dispute is currently in the hands of the Supreme Court, which has formed a committee to find a resolution. The committee may require affidavits from those claiming to be farmers and will ensure the court acts if any boundaries are crossed. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, campaigning in Sonipat for the Haryana assembly elections, accused Congress of exploiting farmers' lands during their tenure and rampant corruption. Haryana will vote on October 5, with results announced on October 8.
