The co-leaders of Germany's Greens party, who form part of Chancellor Olaf Scholz's coalition government, have announced their resignation following a series of disappointing election results.
The party's support has plummeted, particularly in the European Parliament election and three recent state elections in eastern Germany, where they were ousted from two state legislatures. Co-leader Omid Nouripour referred to the recent results as evidence of the party's deepest crisis in a decade, calling for new leadership to steer the party out of its turmoil.
Nouripour and his co-leader Ricarda Lang assumed leadership in early 2022, succeeding Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock. The latter pair joined Scholz's government as vice chancellor and foreign minister respectively. New leaders are slated to be elected at the party congress in mid-November, while the Greens continue grappling with coalition tensions and poor economic conditions in Germany.
