Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Tuesday accused Opposition leaders of contradicting themselves regarding the Badlapur sexual assault case accused, who was killed by police in retaliatory firing.
The accused, Akshay Shinde, died on Monday after he snatched a policeman's pistol and opened fire, injuring an assistant inspector. The incident took place during Shinde's transfer from Taloja Jail to Badlapur in Thane district.
Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that the police acted in self-defence. Pawar highlighted that Opposition leaders previously demanded capital punishment for Shinde but are now questioning the police's actions, labeling it contradictory.
Referring to the recent protests in Badlapur and a rally led by AIMIM leader Imtiaz Jaleel, Pawar called for communal harmony and criticized provocative statements, particularly comments made by BJP MLA Nitesh Rane. He urged restraint in statements for political gain, reminding that democracy should not be misused. Pawar also mentioned ongoing efforts by the Mahayuti government to resolve reservation issues for the Maratha and Dhangar communities.
