In a move fulfilling a key campaign promise, Sri Lanka's newly appointed President Anura Kumara Dissanayake signed a special gazette notification on Tuesday ordering the dissolution of parliament.
The dissolution becomes effective from midnight Tuesday, and the election is now scheduled for November 14, officials stated.
The previous parliament convened in August 2020. This unexpected dissolution occurs 11 months ahead of the planned schedule, aligning with Dissanayake's pledge made during his presidential campaign.
