The CPI(M) on Monday congratulated the people of Sri Lanka for decisively electing Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the country's new president.
The victory of a Left candidate in Sri Lanka's presidential election for the first time in history is a landmark moment, according to the CPI(M).
Dissanayake, a prominent Marxist leader, took the oath as Sri Lanka's ninth president earlier in the day.
In a statement, the CPI(M) Politburo expressed its confidence that Dissanayake would drive the country toward socio-economic development, progress, and welfare.
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) also praised Sri Lanka's electorate for their decisive vote following the Aragalaya protests, which were fueled by an economic crisis.
