Tanzanian Opposition Leaders Blocked Amid Protest Plans
Police in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's commercial capital, blocked the homes of CHADEMA party leaders ahead of banned protests against alleged killings and abductions. Despite improvements under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, police abuses targeting government critics persist, especially with upcoming elections. Tensions have escalated, involving arrests and strict police actions.

In a decisive move early Monday, police in Dar es Salaam restricted access to the residences of two key opposition figures from the CHADEMA party, Freeman Mbowe and Tundu Lissu. The blockade follows the planned protests against alleged killings and abductions of opposition members, which authorities had declared illegal.
Despite a noted improvement in human rights under President Samia Suluhu Hassan since 2021, police actions against government critics seem to be on the rise, particularly as local and national elections approach. This increased tension has rights defenders concerned about the escalation in police behavior.
Earlier in the month, a senior member of CHADEMA was abducted and later found dead under horrific circumstances, fueling the party's grievances. Moreover, recent arrests of party leaders and supporters have added to this charged atmosphere. The local police chief has justified the heavy-handed approach by stating the need to prevent public disorder.
