Anura Kumara Dissanayake was inaugurated as Sri Lanka's ninth president on Monday, amid expectations that he will strengthen the country's economy and tackle corruption.

The 56-year-old leader, affiliated with the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna party's broader coalition, National People's Power (NPP), took the oath of office administered by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya at the Presidential Secretariat.

Dissanayake emerged victorious over his nearest competitor, Sajith Premadasa of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), in Saturday's election. His presidency is seen as a new chapter for Sri Lanka's political landscape.
