Weeks ahead of the Haryana Assembly elections, the All India Congress Committee has suspended rebel party leader Chitra Sarwara for six years over allegations of anti-party activities. Sarwara's decision to contest as an independent candidate from Ambala Cantonment is cited as the primary reason for her suspension.
The Congress claims that Sarwara's independent run against their official candidate, Parvinder Pal Pari, represents a clear violation of party policy. According to an official statement by the AICC, multiple reports from Congress workers indicated Sarwara's actions were detrimental to the party's interests.
The AICC reviewed the evidence and decided on suspension, citing the necessity of maintaining party discipline. Meanwhile, the Haryana legislative assembly elections are scheduled for October 5, with results to be declared on October 8, concurrently with those in Jammu and Kashmir. In 2019, the BJP was the single largest party in Haryana, securing 40 seats, while the Congress won 30. Efforts are currently underway to boost voter turnout through various outreach activities.
