Sri Lankan PM Dinesh Gunawardena Resigns After Presidential Election
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has resigned following the victory of Anura Kumara Dissanayake in the presidential election. Gunawardena, who became PM after Gotabaya Rajapaksa's resignation amidst economic turmoil, informed of his resignation on social media, and it has been formally sent to President-elect Dissanayake.
Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has stepped down from his post following the election of Anura Kumara Dissanayake as the new president. The resignation comes as a significant political shift in the debt-stricken nation.
Gunawardena, 75, who took office in July 2022 after former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled the country amidst massive protests over the country's economic crisis, made his resignation public via a post on X. He expressed gratitude towards outgoing President Ranil Wickremesinghe for the support during his tenure.
According to media reports, Gunawardena has already communicated his resignation formally to President-elect Dissanayake, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Sri Lankan politics.
