Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi rallied the Indian community in the U.S. on Sunday, citing the power of the diaspora ahead of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 5 and the importance of the 2024 contest. Modi addressed a packed coliseum in New York's Long Island suburbs, featuring Indian dancing and songs, without commenting on the contest between U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump.

"This year, 2024, is a very important one for the entire world," he stated, according to a translation of his remarks. "There are conflicts raging between several countries, yet democracy is being celebrated in others. India and America are together in this celebration of democracy," Modi told the crowd.

Approximately 4.5 million people in the U.S. identify as Indian descent, per 2020 Census data. Modi faces a tight race against Harris, who has Indian origins. Earlier this year, he secured a historic third term as prime minister and navigated potential coalition government challenges after a shocking election setback. Modi also met with President Joe Biden in Delaware, as part of the Quad grouping that includes leaders from Australia and Japan. While a U.S. official did not confirm if human rights issues were discussed during the Biden-Modi talks, senior officials met with Sikh advocates beforehand to address threats faced in the U.S.
