Rebel Congress Leader Suspended Over Independent Bid

Chitra Sarwara, a Congress leader contesting as an independent in the Haryana Assembly polls, has been suspended for six years for anti-party activities. Denied a party ticket from Ambala Cantt, Sarwara's independent candidacy has violated Congress policy. She previously lost to BJP's Anil Vij in the same constituency.

Chitra Sarwara, a Congress leader who is running as an independent candidate in the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, has been handed a six-year suspension by the party. The suspension comes as a consequence of what the Congress described as anti-party activities.

Sarwara, initially an aspirant for the Congress ticket from Ambala Cantt, was overlooked in favor of Parvinder Pal Pari. Sarwara's decision to contest independently is seen by the Congress as a breach of party discipline.

Previously, Sarwara had contested the Ambala Cantonment seat independently in the previous elections, losing to BJP's Anil Vij. She is the daughter of former minister Nirmal Singh.
