In a significant pushback against the ruling party, farmers under the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha convened a 'Kisan Mahapanchayat' in Pipli on Sunday, urging the electorate to defeat the BJP in the forthcoming Haryana assembly polls.
The two groups, prominent in the 'Delhi Chalo' movement, have been advocating for legal guarantees of minimum support prices for crops. Since February 13, these protesting farmers have maintained their stance at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders between Punjab and Haryana, despite security interventions.
The gathering, attended by farmers from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh, also set plans for a 'rail roko' protest on October 3 to further pressure the government. Prominent farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher rallied the attendees, condemning the BJP's actions against farmers and calling for their electoral defeat. The event was also a tribute to Shubhkaran Singh, a farmer who died during clashes in February.
