Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized on Saturday that the Quad is focused on establishing a rules-based international order and respect for sovereignty. 'Our message is clear - Quad is here to stay, to assist, to partner and to complement,' Modi stated during his opening remarks at the summit hosted by US President Joe Biden and attended by Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida.
'We are not against anybody, we are for international rules-based order, respect for sovereignty,' Modi reiterated.
Highlighting the Quad's priorities, Modi said the group's main focus is on ensuring a free, open, inclusive, and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, without naming any particular country. This comes amid China's ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea and East China Sea, where it claims sovereignty over the entire South China Sea. These claims are countered by Vietnam, Malaysia, the Philippines, Brunei, and Taiwan.
