The Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA) has released its first list of candidates for the Maharashtra Assembly Elections, featuring 11 names. VBA National President Prakash Ambedkar emphasized that the list represents marginalized and Bahujan groups, aiming to break the political dominance of certain families.
Among the candidates are individuals from various socially and politically excluded communities. Transgender rights activist Shamibha Patil will contest from Raver, while Kisan Chavan from the Pardhi community is the candidate for Shevgaon. VBA spokesperson Disha Pinki Sheikh highlighted the historic significance of Patil's candidature.
Additionally, candidates from VBA's alliance partners, Bharat Adivasi Party and Gondwana Gantantra Party, have been named. The first list also includes representatives from deprived caste groups such as Dhivar, Lohar, and Waddar, as well as two women candidates and a Muslim candidate.
Prakash Ambedkar stated that more names will be announced soon, indicating ongoing discussions with other prominent political parties. He criticized mainstream parties for their silence on significant social issues and accused them of resorting to divisive tactics.
Maharashtra is expected to go to the polls later this year.
