In Jammu and Kashmir's first assembly polls since the abrogation of Article 370, voters showed up in large numbers at polling stations in the Doda district of the Jammu region, expressing hopes of a restored statehood.
Polling was underway on Wednesday across the Chenab valley districts, involving over 7.14 lakh voters, to decide the fate of 64 candidates in the first phase of the elections. South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Shopian were also voting.
Polling began at 7 am in all 1,328 polling stations set up across eight assembly seats in the Chenab valley amid tight security due to a surge in terror activities. Recent months saw fatalities among Army personnel and terrorists.
