Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is safe after an incident on Sunday in which two people exchanged gunfire outside his Florida golf club, according to law enforcement sources cited by the New York Post.
Trump's campaign had initially confirmed his safety following reports of gunshots nearby, while details remained unclear. Trump's son, Donald Trump Jr., mentioned via a post on X that local authorities discovered an AK-47 automatic weapon in the bushes, and a suspect has been apprehended.
Reuters could not immediately verify the account. The shooting occurred outside the Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach. Requests for comments by Trump campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung and the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office were not immediately answered.
In a previous incident, Trump was injured in an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania on July 13. The attempt occurred months before a highly anticipated election against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris. The incident, which saw Trump grazed in the right ear and one rallygoer killed, marked the first such attack on a presidential candidate in over four decades. The gunman, Thomas Crooks, was subsequently shot by a Secret Service sniper. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed and expressed relief over Trump's safety.
