Former Peruvian President Alberto Fujimori was laid to rest on Saturday after three days of national mourning, during which thousands of supporters visited his casket at a Lima museum.
Current President Dina Boluarte saluted Fujimori at a ceremonial burial in the presidential palace, marked by military honors. Fujimori, however, remains a divisive figure, having ruled from 1990 to 2000 and later serving a lengthy prison sentence for crimes against humanity.
Fujimori's tenure saw economic stabilization and the defeat of the Maoist Shining Path group, albeit at a high cost to democracy and human rights. Convicted in 2009 for the massacre of 25 people and the kidnapping of a journalist, he spent years contesting his sentence and faced multiple corruption charges. His 2017 pardon was challenged but eventually reinstated. Fujimori, who passed away at 86, leaves behind a complex legacy and a politically active family, including his daughter Keiko, a prominent conservative leader.
