Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris has extended her lead over Republican Donald Trump to 47% against 42% in the race for the Nov. 5 presidential election, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll concluded on Thursday. The increase in her margin follows a debate performance that many voters deemed a success for Harris.

The two-day survey revealed Harris holding a five-point advantage among registered voters, slightly higher than the four-point lead indicated in an earlier poll conducted from Aug. 21-28. Of those who had some awareness of Tuesday's debate, 53% favored Harris's performance, compared to 24% for Trump. Additionally, 52% of respondents noted that Trump seemed to stumble and lack sharpness, with only 21% saying the same about Harris.

During the heated debate, Harris, 59, put Trump, 78, on the defensive, attacking his fitness for office and ongoing legal troubles. The poll, which included 1,690 U.S. adults and 1,405 registered voters, has a margin of error of approximately three percentage points for registered voters. However, it is the Electoral College's state-by-state results that will ultimately decide the winner, with several battleground states playing a crucial role.
