The United States Treasury Department has announced fresh sanctions on 16 Venezuelan officials connected to President Nicolas Maduro. The sanctions follow the recent departure of opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez from Venezuela after seeking asylum in Spain.
The individuals targeted by these sanctions include leaders from the National Electoral Council and the Supreme Tribunal of Justice. The Treasury Department accused them of obstructing a transparent electoral process and preventing the release of accurate election results.
Additionally, the sanctions extend to military, intelligence, and government officials responsible for repressing the population. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Wally Adeyemo stated that these actions aim to hold Maduro and his representatives accountable for their continued subversion of democratic processes and human rights abuses in Venezuela.
