Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez met Venezuela's self-exiled opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez in Madrid on Thursday, following the Spanish parliament's vote to recognize Gonzalez as the winner of a controversial presidential election held in July.

Gonzalez, 75, sought asylum in Spain while Sanchez was on a visit to China, as he is wanted by Venezuelan authorities on multiple charges. Sanchez welcomed Gonzalez warmly, emphasizing Spain's commitment to humanitarian efforts and solidarity with the Venezuelan people.

In a symbolic motion, Spain's lower house urged the government to recognize Gonzalez as president-elect. However, Prime Minister Sanchez stated his government would continue to push for the release of detailed vote tallies without officially recognizing either candidate.
