The Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday expressed profound sorrow over the demise of its general secretary Sitaram Yechury, marking a significant setback for Left, democratic, and secular factions.
Yechury, aged 72, passed away at AIIMS after a prolonged illness. In critical condition for several days, he was on respiratory support before succumbing to a severe lung infection.
In its statement, the party honored Yechury as an exceptional leader of the Left and a prominent Marxist thinker. Leaders from various affiliations joined in paying tribute, underscoring his pivotal role in shaping political discourse and unity among secular opposition parties.
