Olympic Leadership Race: Age Limits and Rule Changes Challenge Candidates

Candidates vying for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) presidency, including World Athletics chief Sebastian Coe, are navigating election regulations that may impact next year's vote for the new leader of the world's top multi-sports organization.

Former British Olympic champion Coe, 67, and Spanish IOC Vice President Juan Antonio Samaranch Jr., 64, are key contenders eyeing the top post. A recent letter from IOC ethics commission head Ban Ki-moon highlighted that the chosen president must be an IOC member for their entire term. The IOC membership age limit is 70, with one possible four-year extension.

While Coe and Samaranch are currently eligible, they could face challenges during their term should they lose positions that link to their IOC membership. However, IOC presidents do have the capacity to enact rule changes. The final candidate list will be revealed on Sept. 16, with the election scheduled for March 2025 in ancient Olympia, Greece.
