Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Khaleda Zia was admitted to Evercare Hospital early Thursday, according to reports. The 79-year-old BNP leader was taken to the private hospital from her Gulshan residence at around 1:40 am, as confirmed by BNP media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan in a statement to the Dhaka Tribune.
Her physician, Professor AZM Zahid Hossain, stated that a medical board has recommended several tests, and Zia has been placed in a private cabin. "The next course of her treatment will be determined after reviewing the test results," he added.
Zia, who was under house arrest for the past five years, has been battling severe health issues, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, and diabetes. She was recently freed following an order from Bangladesh President Mohammed Shahabuddin after the fall of the Awami League government on August 5. Earlier this month, Zia was acquitted in several cases, including allegations of celebrating a 'fake birthday' and supporting war criminals.
