North Korea fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles toward the sea on Thursday, as confirmed by South Korea's military. This action follows North Korean leader Kim Jong Un's promise to fully prepare his nuclear force for potential conflicts with rivals.
According to South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, the missiles launched from North Korea's capital flew 360 kilometers before landing in waters between the Korean Peninsula and Japan. Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has instructed officials to ensure the safety of ships and aircraft, although no damage has been reported.
These missile launches, which mark North Korea's first public weapon test in over two months, have been condemned by South Korea as a serious threat to regional peace. The increased hostility comes after Kim's pledge to bolster his nuclear forces in response to perceived threats from a U.S.-led military bloc.
