Uncertainty Looms Over Trudeau's Political Future Amidst NDP Withdrawal
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces increased political vulnerability following the New Democratic Party's (NDP) withdrawal of support. With a minority Liberal government holding only 154 of 338 seats, Trudeau risks losing confidence votes, potentially leading to an early general election. NDP leader Jagmeet Singh's case-by-case voting strategy adds to the uncertainty.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's political future appears increasingly uncertain, following the New Democratic Party's (NDP) decision to withdraw its pledge of support. Analysts suggest Trudeau, despite a weakened minority Liberal government, might survive as prime minister at least until the end of the year.
Trudeau's Liberals hold 154 of the 338 seats in the House of Commons and are now vulnerable to losing confidence votes. Should 170 opposition legislators unite against the government, an early general election could be triggered. While polls suggest the right-of-center Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, would gain a majority, the next critical confidence vote is expected during the budget update in late November or December.
NDP leader Jagmeet Singh has indicated that his party will decide on votes on a case-by-case basis. Experts note that the NDP is wary of siding with Conservatives to bring down the Liberals, given potential electoral risks. Additionally, internal dissatisfaction within the Liberal Party could add pressure on Trudeau, who continues to assert his commitment to his role.
