External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar engaged in crucial talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the Saudi capital, Riyadh, amid ongoing global concerns over the Ukraine conflict. This meeting occurred just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged India as a key nation in his efforts to find a resolution.
The productive conversation took place on the sidelines of the India-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) foreign ministers' meeting. The GCC, an influential body comprising the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, and Kuwait, saw significant diplomatic activity as Jaishankar also interacted with Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira, discussing important agendas like G20, BRICS, and the Ukraine crisis.
President Putin, emphasizing the active role of India along with China and Brazil, praised the constructive relations with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, proclaiming India's potential to mediate in the matter. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov highlighted the ongoing constructive dialogue but noted the absence of specific mediation plans for Modi.
