German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser is set to announce temporary border controls at all of Germany's land borders on Monday. The move aims to tackle irregular migration and protect the public from Islamist extremism, according to a government source.

Faeser, scheduled to speak at 1430 GMT, will also notify the European Commission of the plans. The German government has been consulting with the main opposition CDU party on ways to curb migration amid growing public concern and following a recent deadly knife attack by a Syrian asylum seeker in Solingen.

Last week, the anti-immigration AfD party made significant gains in state elections, adding pressure on Faeser's Social Democrats ahead of upcoming state elections in Brandenburg. Germany's extensive 3,700-kilometre land border spans nine countries, and stricter controls were already implemented last year in response to a surge in asylum requests.
