Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez sought asylum in Spain on Sunday after leaving his country amid a political and diplomatic crisis induced by July's contested election, according to a statement from Madrid.

Gonzalez, who has disputed President Nicolas Maduro's victory claim, arrived at Spain's Torrejon de Ardoz military base with his wife, the foreign ministry reported. The 75-year-old politician's exit attracted attention from international observers - including the U.S. and the EU - who view him as the true victor of the vote. This follows a week after Venezuelan authorities issued an arrest warrant, alleging conspiracy among other charges.

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell lamented the event, stating that no political leader in a democracy should be compelled to seek refuge abroad. Meanwhile, Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez mentioned that authorities had facilitated Gonzalez's safe passage to restore political peace.
