German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has emphasized the need for renewed efforts to bring about peace in Ukraine, following discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. Scholz highlighted the urgency of moving from a state of war to peace during an interview with the national broadcaster ZDF.
Domestically, Scholz is under pressure as his coalition suffered significant losses in recent regional elections. Groups advocating for improved relations with Moscow, including the nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) and the new party BSW, saw significant gains, reflecting growing discontent with current policies.
Meanwhile, Zelenskiy has announced plans to prepare for a second international summit on peace in Ukraine by November, with an aim to include Russian representatives. The first summit, held in June without Russian involvement, did not yield significant progress.
