Venezuelan opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez has fled to Spain, seeking asylum, amid escalating political tensions following the disputed July election results. Official sources revealed Gonzalez's departure overnight, with his plane having a layover in Portugal's Azores islands before proceeding to Spain.

The dramatic exit of the 75-year-old politician, recognized by the U.S., the EU, and regional powers as the legitimate winner, follows an arrest warrant issued by Venezuelan authorities. The warrant accuses Gonzalez of conspiracy and other charges, sparking condemnation from international figures. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell expressed sadness over the situation, stating no political leader should be forced into exile in a democracy.

Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez confirmed on Instagram that authorities provided Gonzalez safe passage to promote political peace. Gonzalez had initially sought refuge in European embassies in Caracas, ultimately leaving on a Spanish Air Force plane following Madrid's intervention at his request. The opposition continues to claim a significant victory in the July elections, despite President Nicolas Maduro's accusations of sabotage by right-wing factions.
