Former Venezuelan presidential opposition candidate, Edmundo Gonzalez, 75, has departed for Spain amid escalating political and diplomatic tensions following Venezuela's contested election. Gonzalez, who ran against President Nicolas Maduro, sought refuge in the Spanish embassy in Caracas several days prior to his departure, Venezuelan officials confirmed on Saturday night.

Spain's Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares confirmed Gonzalez's departure on a Spanish Air Force plane in response to Gonzalez's request for asylum. The move marks a significant development in the political landscape of Venezuela, with international criticism mounting over the conduct of the July 28 election. Despite the electoral commission and Venezuela's Supreme Court asserting Maduro's victory, the opposition claims Gonzalez had a clear win, presenting online vote tallies as evidence.

Additionally, diplomatic relations between Venezuela and Argentina have deteriorated, leading to the revocation of Brazil's authorization to represent Argentine interests in Venezuela. Argentina and Brazil have urged the Venezuelan government to release full election results. The situation has drawn international attention, with Argentina's Foreign Ministry calling for the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant against Maduro and other high-ranking officials.
