Pope Francis is making a historic visit to East Timor, landing in a nation starkly different from the one visited by Pope John Paul II in 1989. At that time, the nation was under Indonesian occupation, and the visit significantly boosted East Timor's independence movement.

Father Francisco Barreto, who remembers the 1989 visit, sees Pope Francis's visit as a new opportunity for the country's progress. 'This visit is grace from God,' said Barreto, accentuating the nation's ongoing struggles to diversify its economy, foster political renewal, and combat corruption.

Despite recent abuse scandals plaguing the Church, the Pope's visit is anticipated to draw massive crowds to Dili. According to Michael Leach from Australia's Swinburne University, the Catholic Church remains a unifying force in the nation. Preparations for the visit are extensive, with the government allocating $12 million for the event.
