West Bengal Legislative Assembly Leader of Opposition (LoP) Suvendu Adhikari has formally requested that President Droupadi Murmu and Union Home Minister Amit Shah withdraw the President's Police Medal and Police Medal awarded to Vineet Goyal, the current Commissioner of Police in Kolkata. Adhikari accuses Goyal of 'shameful conduct' during the investigation into the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College.

Adhikari made these allegations public via a social media post, where he detailed Goyal's alleged complicity in the destruction of material evidence and failure to act during a night of vandalism at RG Kar Medical College on August 14, 2024. 'His attempts to sabotage the investigations into possibly the most heinous crime in the country today,' Adhikari wrote, citing Goyal's actions as driven by a desire to protect influential individuals in the state.

Adhikari further criticized Goyal's actions for damaging the longstanding reputation of the Kolkata Police and contributing to a deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal. He also called for Union Home Minister Amit Shah's intervention to censure the State Government for alleged lapses in adhering to guidelines regarding the withdrawal and forfeiture of the President's Police Medal.
