Controversy Unfolds as Tunisian Presidential Candidate Ayachi Zammel Detained
Ayachi Zammel, a Tunisian presidential candidate, has been detained pending trial on allegations of falsifying endorsements, a move critics say is aimed at eliminating rivals to President Kais Saied. Zammel denies the charges and accuses the government of intimidation. The incident casts doubt over the election's legitimacy.
Tunisia's public prosecutor detained presidential candidate Ayachi Zammel on Wednesday, intensifying the ongoing political drama. Zammel, accused of falsifying popular endorsements, was arrested on Monday. This is seen by critics as President Kais Saied's tactic to eliminate re-election challengers.
Zammel, who strongly denies the allegations, claims he faces "restrictions and intimidation" as a serious contender against Saied. His lawyer, Kais Oueslati, informed Reuters that Zammel remains in custody pending an undecided trial date.
The controversy follows Tunisia's electoral commission's defiance of a court ruling to reinstate three prominent candidates. Observers, including rights groups and political parties, argue this raises serious questions about the North African country's electoral legitimacy and legality.
