BJP activists clashed with police on Wednesday at Panskura and Onda during protests against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a Kolkata hospital last month.
The protesters, who demanded Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation for her 'failure' to prevent such incidents, burned tyres and shouted slogans at both locations. A scuffle ensued between activists and police personnel but was quickly contained, according to an official.
The demonstrators also accused the state machinery of 'shielding the real culprits' and diverting attention from the investigation. BJP state president and Union minister Sukanta Majumdar led the gherao of district magistrate offices at Balurghat, reiterating the call for the CM's resignation.
Meanwhile, BJP supporters continued their sit-in at Esplanade crossing in Kolkata, holding placards demanding justice for the postgraduate trainee. The young doctor's body was discovered in the seminar room of state-run RG Kar Medical College on August 9, sparking nationwide outrage.
