Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu has declared the recent heavy rains and subsequent flooding in Andhra Pradesh, especially in Vijayawada, as the 'biggest disaster' he has witnessed in his political career.
On Monday, Naidu announced plans to urge the central government to recognize the flood as a national calamity. So far, at least 17 people have lost their lives due to rain-related incidents and subsequent flooding.
'In my career, this is the biggest disaster. We have faced events like the Hudhud hurricane and Titli cyclone, but the human suffering and property loss this time are unprecedented,' he emphasized at a press conference. The NTR district collectorate has been converted into a temporary secretariat amid the crisis.
Naidu committed to sending comprehensive reports of the catastrophe to the central government, seeking generous financial aid for recovery efforts. He highlighted that the Prakasam Barrage in Vijayawada had witnessed its highest floodwater levels, causing significant inundation in various areas.
The Chief Minister said that while water levels are slowly receding, the situation remains severe. His administration is utilizing all available transportation methods for food distribution, including boats, tractors, vans, and even drones and helicopters for hard-to-reach areas.
Naidu also placed emphasis on the ongoing relief operations, noting the deployment of senior IAS officers and other officials to manage the crisis effectively. Despite the challenges, he reaffirmed his resolve to ensure food supplies reach flood victims, citing numerous heartbreaking stories from his visits.
He questioned the incident of large boats drifting toward Prakasam Barrage, speculating a possible conspiracy and stressing the importance of avoiding further dangers.
