Former junior union minister Nisith Pramanik was arrested on Monday following clashes between BJP workers and police in Cooch Behar. The chaos erupted during a demonstration against the alleged rape and murder of a doctor at a state-run Kolkata hospital early last month.

BJP workers held rallies in various districts of West Bengal, protesting against the doctor's death that had sparked nationwide outrage. Protests were staged in front of district magistrates' offices in Bardhaman, Malda, Coochbehar, and Jhargram, among others.

In Cooch Behar, the tension escalated as agitators allegedly pelted police with bricks. The police responded by using batons and tear gas to disperse the crowd, leading to a large-scale commotion. Among the 22 arrested was Nisith Pramanick, who led the rally.

Barricades had been set up in front of the district magistrates' offices across the state, which the BJP workers attempted to breach. In Bardhaman, the police faced significant challenges in preventing the thronging of BJP protestors before the DM's office. The protestors demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal.

The incident in question involves a post-graduate trainee doctor who was found dead in a seminar room at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Following allegations of rape, a civic police volunteer was arrested the next day. The case is currently under investigation by the CBI as per a Calcutta High Court order.
