Ahead of the Maharashtra assembly elections, expected later this year, BJP legislators from Mumbai convened for a six-hour closed-door meeting with RSS leaders at Yashwant Bhavan in Lower Parel on Sunday.
Though tight-lipped about the discussions, a Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) functionary described the meeting as 'routine.' BJP Mumbai chief Ashish Shelar, MLA from Bandra, targeted the opposition Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) over their protest related to the collapse of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's statue in Sindhudurg on August 26, labeling it as 'politically motivated' ahead of the state polls.
In the recent Lok Sabha elections, the BJP-led alliance performed poorly in Maharashtra, securing only 17 of the 48 seats, while the MVA bagged 30 seats. The Maharashtra assembly elections, featuring 288 seats, are likely to be held in October or November. BJP secured 16 of the 36 Mumbai seats in the last state polls.
