Kamala Harris Criticizes Trump Over Cemetery Visit Used in Campaign Videos
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris criticized Donald Trump for using footage from a visit to Arlington National Cemetery in his campaign videos. Trump's visit, part of a wreath-laying ceremony for servicemembers killed in the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, faced backlash for being politicized. Veterans generally favor the Republican Party, according to Pew Research.
U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has criticized former President Donald Trump for using footage from a visit to Arlington National Cemetery in his campaign videos. On Saturday, Harris asserted that the cemetery is 'a solemn place' meant to honor American heroes and not for political purposes, in an X post.
Trump had taken part in a wreath-laying ceremony on Monday to honor 13 servicemembers who were killed during the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021. His visit to Section 60, a hallowed part of the cemetery, and subsequent use of video footage in campaign advertisements drew criticism for violating Pentagon policies that prevent political activities in the area.
Trump defended his actions by saying families of service members had requested his visit and photos. However, Harris condemned his actions as disrespecting sacred ground. The U.S. Army defended a cemetery employee who faced backlash for intervening during the visit. The incident could influence the upcoming election debate, particularly given that veterans generally favor the Republican party, as reported by Pew Research.
