Germany Resumes Deportation of Afghan Criminals Amid Election Pressure
Germany has restarted deporting convicted Afghan criminals ahead of upcoming regional elections. The move follows increased pressure after recent violent incidents linked to migrants. Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed the first flight with 28 deportees onboard. The decision has sparked controversy, particularly from NGOs like ProAsyl, amidst concerns over human rights.
Germany has restarted the deportation of convicted Afghan criminals, with the first flight taking off from Leipzig to Kabul on Friday. The move comes days before regional elections where migration is a key issue.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz confirmed the operation at a news conference following secret negotiations involving mediator Qatar. Vice Chancellor Robert Habeck stressed that the right to asylum must remain untouched. The government is preparing more deportations and thanked regional partners, though they weren't named.
This decision has been met with criticism from NGOs like ProAsyl. Tareq Alaows, a spokesperson for the group, condemned the action as irresponsible. The German government clarified that this does not signify normalization of relations with the Taliban. Efforts are also underway to deport individuals to Syria under revised asylum policies.
