Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is set to propose European Affairs Minister Raffaele Fitto for the upcoming European Commission. The nomination aims to secure a prominent portfolio, her office announced on Friday.
Fitto, 55, has been instrumental in managing Italy's allocation of EU COVID-19 recovery funds. With a background as an EU lawmaker and a political lineage, Fitto has also served as president of the Puglia region. Prime Minister Meloni emphasized his extensive experience and successful portfolio management as key reasons for his nomination.
The European Commission, the EU's executive arm, will be headed by Ursula von der Leyen for a second term. Despite opposition from Meloni's Brothers of Italy party during von der Leyen's initial appointment, Italy aims to secure a vice-presidency role in the new commission. Meloni remains optimistic about Italy's significant role despite internal political disagreements.
