On Friday, the Akal Takht declared Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal 'tankhaiya', holding him guilty of religious misconduct due to 'mistakes' made by his party's government from 2007 to 2017. This decision was announced after a meeting of five Sikh head priests, led by Gyani Raghbir Singh, Jathedar of the Akal Takht.
The Jathedar stated that Badal, who served as deputy chief minister and SAD president, made decisions detrimental to the party and harmful to Sikh interests. Until Badal appears before the Akal Takht in the presence of Guru Granth Sahib to seek an apology, he remains declared as 'tankhaiya'.
Additionally, Sikh ministers from the Akali cabinet between 2007 and 2017 must present written explanations to the Akal Takht within 15 days. Badal has already sought 'unconditional forgiveness' for the errors committed during SAD's rule in Punjab, emphasizing his humility and dedication to the Guru Granth Sahib and the Akal Takht.
