The city is poised for pivotal rallies and demonstrations on Friday, sparked by the tragic rape-murder of a doctor. Political parties, including the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP, alongside several civil society organisations, are set to flood the streets as the protests hit their third week.
BJP's women's wing, frustrated by the perceived negligence of the state women's commission, plans a march to the commission's office, accusing it of bias since the discovery of the victim’s body on August 9. According to BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar, Mahila Morcha members intend to lock the office from the outside in protest.
The BJP will persist with its sit-in protest at Esplanade for a second consecutive day on Friday, continuing a week-long demand for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and justice for the deceased. Meanwhile, the TMC will orchestrate college protests across Bengal, urging the Centre to enact a law imposing capital punishment for rapists, with planned sit-ins at every block on August 31.
The body of the woman, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found on August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, sparking widespread outrage.
