The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended the membership of Dr. Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, amidst a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe. The investigation revolves around the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor earlier this month.
According to IMA President Dr. RV Ashokan, the decision came after a disciplinary committee at IMA headquarters reviewed grievances from the victim's parents and various doctor's associations. These groups claimed that Dr. Ghosh had sullied the reputation of the medical profession.
The disciplinary measures follow a High Court directive for the CBI to investigate alleged corruption at the medical college. The Court has granted the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report by September 17. Alongside this, the Supreme Court ordered the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) to take over security at the college. The trainee doctor was found deceased in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9.
