The Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, on Tuesday accused the police of 'brutal repression' during the peaceful 'Nabanna Abhijan' rally in the city and Howrah. He threatened to stall the state if the alleged 'brutalities' by the state administration were not ceased.
The senior BJP leader told reporters, 'Police is using water cannons on peaceful protestors at Santragachi, burst tear gas shells on the students at Howrah Bridge, lathicharged them at College Street. Please stop these brutalities immediately.'
Adhikari warned, 'If the police repression is not stopped immediately, we (BJP) will stall West Bengal tomorrow.'
Chhatra Samaj, the rally organizers, asserted that no BJP leader or any other political figure would lead their apolitical protest demanding the ouster of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, citing her alleged failure to safeguard women's safety.
On Tuesday, police utilized water cannons, tear gas, and lathi charges to disperse protesters at the Kolkata end of Howrah Bridge and near Santragachhi Railway station on Kona Expressway, as efforts were made to breach police barricades to reach the state secretariat, Nabanna.
