Jake Sullivan to Visit China for Key Diplomatic Meetings
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan will visit China to meet Foreign Minister Wang Yi next week. The visit aims to prepare for a potential meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. The trip occurs amid a U.S. presidential campaign focusing on tough-on-China policies.
White House National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan is set to visit China to meet with Foreign Minister Wang Yi next week, Axios reported on Friday, citing three sources familiar with the matter.
Sullivan and Yi are expected to lay the groundwork for a possible meeting between U.S. President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping later this year. This follows their California summit last November. Sullivan's visit, scheduled for August 27-29, comes during an intense U.S. presidential campaign. Both Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and her opponent Donald Trump have taken tough stances on China, especially regarding tariffs, Axios noted.
The White House and the Chinese foreign ministry have not immediately responded to Reuters' requests for comment.
