Thaksin Shinawatra, a dominant figure in Thai politics, emphasized on Thursday that his party's proposed 500 billion baht ($14.53 billion) handout is crucial for reviving a struggling economy. The announcement signals a commitment to this economic strategy by the incoming government.

In a groundbreaking political move, Thaksin's daughter, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, was elected by parliament on Friday as Thailand's second female prime minister, succeeding Srettha Thavisin, who was dismissed following a court ruling.

"It's about stimulating the economy," Thaksin stated at a Bangkok event, reiterating the urgency of the plan. (At the current exchange rate, $1 = 34.4200 baht)
